OK Hostel / Terrible Host

The place will be in worse condition than in the photos. I don't get the hype about the 5 star reviews. This place is just plain OK. The bed space is what you can expect from a hostel. There was a lot of dust all around the place. Furniture was in poor condition, especially the chairs at the tables, which were uncomfortable and the backs were missing. There was breakfast provided you ate before the other guests finished everything. The host is alright, although it seems like he treated me like a child. The man got on my case for dripping a bit of water on the ground near the bathroom sink (which I could hardly fit my hands in; it's that small) At the end, it's just 3 drops of water. I just felt the vibe that he was annoyed by the guests. However, he will give you local recommendations. Also I don't know if he does this for everyone, but he will insist on a picture of you before you leave, which isn't really a problem. In all honestly the hostel I stayed at overnight the day before, Grandouce was much more comfortable than this one. Lastly, the location is quite far from the popular destinations in Tokyo so be prepared for long metro rides. Choose wisely. EDIT: Apparently Tak (the host) did not take kindly to my Airbnb review. His private message to me after my review: I have wrote good review to you because I have respectful mind to all guests. But, I hope to take that back. I never want to see you again, definitely. EDIT: On airbnb I gave him all 5 stars and one 4 star for cleanliness. I will now make it a 1 star here due to the host's attitude. I suppose the host doesn't like honest reviews.

I don't really recommend this hostel. The bed was no problem, but share space wasn’t cleaned up enough and the room smelled weird. Dust and many stuffs are messy. ( Previous visitor left many stuffs) And not only but also the day I visited the guy was unkind. I felt very different from the photos. Maybe it changed.. 共有スペースが掃除されていなくて、写真と全然違うと感じました。ベットはいいですが、共有スペースが他のホステルよりも狭いと思います。アクセスはいいですが、私はおすすめしないです。

Unexpectedly great place to stay!

This place is a little far from central Tokyo as mentioned in other reviews, but travel from this spot is quite easy using the Keisei line (about a 5 minute walk). Tak goes above and beyond to provide a welcoming and memorable stay for all of his guests. He often gathers all the willing guests to go to the best nearby restaurants (we went to a tonkatsu-ni (?) spot which put a different twist on the traditional dish as well as a delicious ramen/tsukkemen spot that I still think about today). There were two instances that he went above and beyond: 1) He overheard one of the guests talking to a family member over the phone about her birthday that day and he provided a cake for all of us to celebrate with her over dinner. 2) I unfortunately forgot my glasses when we were leaving Tokyo and he eventually found and shipped them to me at no cost to myself. All in all, despite Tak being a strict on a few things that wouldn't seem to be a big deal (as mentioned in other reviews), the accommodations are great if you're looking for a place to sleep as well as a few recommendations about good food and things to do/see.

Hostile Hostel

So I know I have read some other reviews that were mostly positive, but times have changed with this hostel. Let me walk everyone through this mess. We were let in by two gentleman whom impersonated themselves as workers...keep in mind the host did not come in until around 11am and as first time visitors in Japan, we (me and my two other friends) had no idea what was going on. The "workers" told us to put our stuff on the bed and it was no problem at all. Then after coming back for our actual check in time the host shows up. The host immediately looks terrified and runs upstairs to yell at the two gentlemen we later found out were guests. The guests were presumably kicked out and we thought all was solved...until the host prepares to harshly lecture me and my friends and placing the blame on us! He blamed the suitcases on the bed, us being let in before check in, and everything else on us as well. I tried to explain to the host that we were sorry and given that we are used to placing suitcases on our beds in our home country, that we apologise if we came off as culturally insensitive and I tried to thank him for correcting our mistakes. He got mad when I thanked him and took it as criticism! When everyone calmed down we went to formally check in. When we explained to our host that we were foreign exchange students visiting form another country, he thought our dorm addresses were fake! After this we all decided to spend the whole day in Tokyo to avoid the host. The host said he would leave at midnight to go home. And we came back at a little past midnight and he was waiting for us. He apologised to one of my friends for his previous behaviour...but five minutes later when we were trying to pack and adjust after a long day, he came into the hostel dorm and yelled at us to be quiet (when we were just organising our stuff). Another thing I want to point out is that the hostel common area did have some cool nostalgic decor, but the kitchen was dingy and beer cans and other trash were littered on the kitchen floor. The host tried to cover this up with no avail. And keep in mind we were as polite as possible and did not drink or smoke or do anything bad. Our host should have been more understanding of the situation and looking back, I wish I could have taken our things and find somewhere else to say. I am never coming back here. I would honestly take my money and just rent a caupsle hotel in central Tokyo. Avoid this host and hostel at all costs!
